| Origin
of the name
General Sir Walter N. Congreve was a British Governor of the
Maltese Islands. General Sir Congreve was highly respected
by his subjects for being very generous. He was notorious
for his bravery as a soldier. He was awarded the Victoria
Cross, Britain's highest honour, for the bravery he showed
in the African War. In his free time, General Sir Congreve
used to fish in the strait between Malta and Filfla. His dying
wish was to be buried in these waters, which were for him
a source of enjoyment and relaxation. His death came about
on the 28th of February 1927. His dying wish was that the
Carnival festivities, an important part of the Maltese tradition,
were not to be cancelled because of his death. However, all
festivities were stopped, and as many as 20,000 people filed
past his body in St.Paul's Anglican Cathedral in Valletta,
where his funeral was held. Even the parliament was adjourned
for one week, as the Prime Minister Sir Ugo Mifsud thought
it apt to show such an act of respect for the beloved General.
On the 4th of March 1927, the coffin in which General Sir
Congreve lay was carried on a gun carriage and taken on board
the HMS Chrysanthemum. The HMS Chrysanthemum reached the waters
which General Sir Congreve loved so much. His body was bestowed
to the deep seas in the strait between Malta and Filfa, and
17 Guns fired as one, saluting the General. Two memorials,
one in Floriana and one at Mnajdra, were placed, commemorating
the sea burial of General Sir Walter N. Congreve.
