| You
may be forgiven for walking past this particular establishment
in Old Theatre Street, Valletta; distracted as many are in
the lunchtime bustle with the Valletta Monti opposite.
Just
round the corner from the National Library, there is a plain
glass door with those magic words ‘Trattoria Palazz’.
Behind this door to the left, lies a well laid table and below
a typical Maltese window, a flight of steps take you away
from the suffocating heat to this oasis of tranquility and
culinary delight.
This
is the sort of establishment where you are just as likely
to see a government minister, member of parliament, leading
businessmen or sports personalities – all at the same
sitting. Apart from priding itself with its excellent food,
Trattoria Palazz also has an extensive wine list – 450
at the last count, some vintages being well over 30 years.

Proprietor
Carlos Borg deliberately chose the name “trattoria”.
The unassuming, affable host declared, “This is not
a restaurant ; it is a family concern”. Indeed he counts
himself, his wife, his daughter together with the remaining
members of his staff, who all help in making the establishment
the success that it is.
